The water area of the shipbuilding and repair yard, the sea port, as well as the Buh Estuary is not an exception. Water bloom is intensified by river flow and by sewage water discharged from a rain sewage system located on the port territory near the shipyard. Having accurately inspected the shipyard’s territory, the company’s specialists concluded that the water condition was caused by an accumulation of blue-green algae washed into the shipyard’s territory from the estuary by the wind. The specialists have taken samples to analyze the water. Representatives from the State Ecological Inspection of Ukraine attended the territory. They register water area pollution caused by substances and sewage from the city’s open waste water drainage system. The previous conclusions of the State Ecological Inspection coincide with the company’s ones, namely algal bloom. This process has been recently observed along the riverbank of the Buh Estuary in Velyka Korenyha. The state inspectors have also taken water samples for analysis.Certain mass media published information about this problem. Instead of a well-reasoned approach and analysis, they started to scare people with “…large-scale pollution…”, “…shrilly green liquid…”, “…dead fish…” When spreading the unchecked information, rumors and guesses, the situation was commented by the so-called “specialists who have long work experience in Mykolaiv Sea Port” According to them, “…the estuary pollution was caused by a vessel that had discharged this “liquid” at night. This event can be explained reasonably. An increase in the daily temperature has intensified water bloom. Algal bloom occurs in summer (from June until September) when the water temperature is above + 27-28C. It starts in shallow areas and in places where low river flow cannot perform natural cleansing. The water bloom is a phytoplankton growth causing water colour changing. Water often turns green, but it can be yellow and brown or red, depending on the river weed species. The increased bacteria cause the reduction of the dissolved oxygen content. Fish and aquatic insects cannot survive. This results in dead areas.By the way, in order to prevent these situations, the company regularly stocks Ukrainian rivers with herbivorous fish, such as silver carp that eats potentially dangerous river weed. It should be mentioned that the company also worries about sewage water being discharged from the city’s open sewer system located on the port territory in close proximity to NIBULON’s territory (berth No.0). This is why the Buh Estuary water area is constantly polluted by oil products, sewage and fecal water, as well as other waste products from the city. The municipal enterprise “Operating and Linear Management of Roads” owns the network of drainage system which discharges surface sewage water from the city’s territory into the water.We constantly raise an issue about river pollution by sewage water. This waste water brings considerable danger to the environment. The company has repeatedly addressed various bodies, responsible authorities, and organizations. Unfortunately, the effective measures to regulate water relations have not yet been taken . Despite all the factors, we ask everyone to spread information reasonably and not to spread panic.
