Representatives of Japanese business compare situation in the Ukrainian grain market with tsunami

On the 23rd of April there was a meeting between representatives of “NIBULON” and the Japanese company “Mitsui” (“Mitsui & Co”). Foreign delegations visited both the company’s transshipment terminal in Mykolayiv, and newly built transshipment terminal in Nova Odesa (Mykolayiv region). “Mitsui” is a diversified trading and investment corporation with sphere of activities in different fields such as agriculture, machinery, chemical industry, power engineering, electronics, consumer goods and services, financial sector. The company actively works in the markets of the former USSR. Japanese businessmen are interested in “NIBULON” primarily because it is an experienced player of the world grain market and it is a successful investor. Since its foundation, “NIBULON” has invested over UAH 7.3 billion to the economy of Ukraine, including directly to the development of agricultural production – UAH 2.29 billion. “Mitsui” is also a major investor: total volume of company’s investments in economy of Russia only, compile more than USD 3 billion, it is the largest volume of investments among Japanese companies. Today “Mitsui” is interested in participating in investment projects of agrarian sector of Ukraine. Thus prospects for grain exports in the next marketing year and further development of grain infrastructure of Ukraine, the possibilities of creation a lasting partnership with “NIBULON” were discussed at the meeting. In particular, Japanese guests were interested in a unique experience of “NIBULON” in the reconstruction and development of grain supply by the Dnipro and the Southern Bug Rivers. “Mitsui” company was greatly impressed by a new administrative building of the transshipment terminal of “NIBULON” with 3 lines for automotive transport and the most modern laboratory. “We have visited a lot of transshipment terminals in America and Europe, but we have never seen such a facility, it is one of the most modern complexes, – the head of division of grain and feed business of “Mitsui” Mr. Yasuharu Fudziyosi says. – Our company also has its own transshipment terminals in the U.S. and Brazil but unfortunately they are not equipped with such excellent laboratories for testing of grain.” The new transshipment terminal of “NIBULON” in Nova Odesa town, which is the first elevator complex of the company at the Southern Bug River, also impressed Japanese guests. Representatives of Japanese business were able to discuss the production issues with the branch director Vyacheslav Klymenko. Japanese delegation was passed over the current situation in Ukraine in the grain market. Thus most of the questions of the Japanese side were related to the prospects of export and problems of quotas in Ukraine. According to the head of marketing and external relations department of “NIBULON” Valeriy Kunyts’kyy, “unfortunately today it is impossible to build any long-term forecasts in Ukraine because of the unpredictability of government actions. Before introduction of quotas “NIBULON” exported about 5 million tons a year, but in this marketing year only 1.7 million tons were shipped for export, 125 thousand tons of them were shipped since the beginning of 2011. In turn, we certainly support the conduction of transparent predictable policy in the agricultural sector by relevant ministries and government. In this regard international banks, with whom we closely cooperate, support us. Unfortunately, this issue remains unresolved. Today several bills aimed at monopolizing the grain market have already been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. “Most traders left the market because of introducing quotas. “Khlib Investbud” became the main player in the market and received a large share of quotas” – the head of treaties performance department of“NIBULON” Kostyantyn Nagornyak says. Analyzing the problem of grain export quotas, representatives of Japanese company compared the unpredictability of situation on grain market of Ukraine to those natural disasters that happened to Japan a month ago. But unfortunately, actions of some Ukrainian authorities are even more unpredictable than natural elements.
