NIBULON Sponsors a Ukrainian Record Distance 50km Swimming Competition along the Southern Buh River

NIBULON has been building high-capacity transshipment terminals and modern vessels, as well as developing navigation, for more than 10 years. The company also dredges rivers as, after a long period of inactivity, Ukraine’s navigable waterways simply disappear.  Water stagnation, river silting and river weed overgrowth are phenomena that occur in our rivers. They are the result of regulation and dependence on the release of reservoirs. Rivers lose their natural self-purification properties, and the biological diversity of the aquatic ecosystem and the composition of its species becomes poorer each year. This process has already started and, as a result of climate change (increase of temperatures and decrease of precipitations), the negative consequences only intensify. The Southern Buh River has received its second chance for revival. NIBULON did not allow the river to turn into a valley with swampy banks, which in certain places would soon be able to be crossed on foot. The company carried out the first stage of dredging works in 2015. As a result, 100 km of the waterway became navigable. Thanks to this, the next year the cargo fleet arrived in Voznesensk for the first time in a quarter of a century. The second stage of dredging allowed the company to increase the depth of the navigable pass on the Kostiantynivka sandbar to 2.5 m. It resulted in more efficient loading of non-self-propelled vessels, a decrease in the number of cargo trips and a reduction in the number of trucks in Mykolaiv region. The renewal of navigable regions of the Southern Buh River and the partial cleaning of silt deposits, algae and reeds was the beginning of its recovery. The drainage properties of the river are revived, the flow is accelerated; this reduces the number of flooded stagnant areas with algae blooms. The environment is being improved as the constant revolving of the vessels’ propellers oxygenates the water. NIBULON renews fishery resources of the Southern Buh River systematically.  Over the five years, the company has stocked the river with more than 440 thousand units of fish fry. Thanks to NIBULON, a recreation area has been established near the company’s terminal in Nova Odesa, where all the residents and guests of the town can swim in the river and relax under comfortable canopies equipped with benches. Due to NIBULON’s works aimed at reviving navigation on the Southern Buh River, the sports potential of the river is being realized. On August 25, 2020, a swimming competition on open water over the pentamarathon distance (50 km) along the river from Voznesensk to Nova Odesa was held for the first time. The idea for such a competition belongs to Serhii Shumov, the Ukrainian open water swimming champion in his age category and a finalist of the first 30-km Ultraoceanman swim in Greece. The territorial community of Voznesensk (Mykolaiv region) organized the event. They asked NIBULON to support this truly historic event. Being the real leaders in the development of Ukrainian rivers as navigable waterways, NIBULON supported the development of water sport on the Southern Buh River, becoming the general sponsor of the competition. In addition, the swimmers started the competition at NIBULON’s Voznesenska branch and finished at Novoodeska branch. “I express my gratitude to Oleksiy Vadaturskyy for the fact that he always supports projects that make our country famous. It is thanks to NIBULON’s support that we were able to hold this event to such a high standard. The area of the Southern Buh River is suitable for such a competition due to dredging operations carried out by NIBULON. This is not only about today’s event. This is about all NIBULON’s social and economic projects, because NIBULON is the development of the whole region and the country. NIBULON is an international company.  And thanks to your support, next year we will have a chance to hold international competitions, which will undoubtedly glorify Ukraine in the world”, said Vitalii Lukov, Voznesensk mayor.  Considerable attention was paid to the safety of the competition. NIBULON suspended the operation of its water transport on the Southern Buh River between the terminals during the race period. Healthcare workers, rescuers and police were also on the alert. Each swimmer was accompanied by a motorboat.  In total, seven swimmers from Ukraine took part in the competition. They are participants, prize-winners and winners of international open water swimming competitions over different distances. Mykhailo Kobyzhcha finished first, followed by Anna Pasichnyk and Andrii Savytskyi. Mykhailo Romanyshyn and Vladyslav Kurysko took the fourth and the fifth places respectively. Two swimmers, Serhii Shumov and Vitalii Stupak, shared the sixth place. At the award ceremony, the winners received diplomas and unique medals made from pure silver. After the last participant of the competition had finished, the record for “The longest distance open water swimming competition in Ukraine” was recorded at the berth of the Novoodeska branch.
