Is Japan a Country of Samurai and… Ukrainian Grain?

The trade and economic relations between Japan and Ukraine develop rapidly. In particular, a rapid increase of grain crop export, mainly corn, from Ukraine to Japan should be noted. Besides, in 2011/12 MY the share of corn export to this country comprises 24% of the world export and all-Ukrainian export of this corn to Japan increased up to 5% for the last years. In 2011/12 MY, for the first time, “NIBULON” performed corn supply to Japan according to American quality standards (earlier the company exported barley and wheat to this country). Therefore, Japan pays particular attention to a detailed study of possibilities and potential of the Ukrainian agriculture, including grain production and export. On October 5, 2012, for this purpose, the experts of Japanese agricultural corporation “Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation of Japan” (ALIC) visited “NIBULON” transshipment terminal of “Pereyaslavs’ka” branch (Kyiv region). The given corporation is an independent administrative agency responsible to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Japan. The delegation included Shinichi Shinkawa, D.V.M., a chief researcher of the corporation, and Takanor I Yamagami, a researcher. The goal of their visit was to become familiar with the transshipment terminal, technological processes, technical equipment and, therefore, a general familiarization with “NIBULON”. During an excursion within the transshipment terminal the guests: – visited the laboratory where they familiarized themselves with the equipment and they were also demonstrated the processes of grain sampling and its quality determination; – became familiar with the technological processes at the terminal, including grain taking process – from documentation receipt from a supplier, weighting and analysis to unloading; – watched the modern dryers “Mathews Company 3180” (the USA) being in service which are used at the terminal, got to know their technical characteristics; – familiarized themselves with the dust-trapping equipment “Simatek” (Denmark) installed at the terminal; – observed the process of “NIBULON” non-self-propelled vessel loading using a ship-loading machine “Telestack” (Great Britain); – they were informed about “NIBULON” own non-self-propelled and tug fleet. During the discussion with participation of the guests and “NIBULON’s” specialists, including Oleksandr Khohlov, the deputy general director of quality and product storage, there were discussed a number of questions, namely: – systems of grain quality control, including corn; – corn production; – reasons and factors of corn production increase in Ukraine and in the world; – control of import seed grain and GMO content; – conditions of corn export; – peculiarities of market operations during grain (corn) realization. The visit testified: in the light of recent changes in the world agrarian market, taking into account position changes of its leading players, appearance of new powerful exporters and importers, Ukraine is considered to be one of the largest world exporters of agricultural products. The market expansion of domestic export is a peculiar sign for powerful importers, an appeal to show more interest by the Ukrainian agrarian possibilities. “NIBULON” should play one of the key roles to expand the Ukrainian presence in the world product market. Not without reason our new potential partners pay great attention to us …
