February 9, 2012, the second international conference “Agroresources 2012: ways of increasing agricultural production profitability” was held within the exhibition “InterAgro 2012”. The conference is organized by IA “APK-Inform” with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Ukraine and Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation. Within the frames of “Agroresources-2012,” a number of key topics of the industry was discussed, including changes that await agricultural policy in 2012; issues related to the introduction of a land market in Ukraine; profitability of agricultural production; short-term prospects for the agricultural market of Ukraine. This year the conference has assumed an international format. 130 participants from 7 countries showed interest to participate in the event (Canada, Germany, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, France and Switzerland). Head of trade department of “NIBULON” Kateryna Koval’s’ka was among the conference speakers: “In consonance with the analysis of growing crops from “NIBULON”, the most profitable crop among oilseeds is sunflower and corn – among grain in 2011/12 MY. We think that spring barley and feed wheat are the least profitable crops to cultivate,” Kateryna Koval’s’ka said in her report. Kateryna Koval’s’ka noted that profitability of feed wheat and milling wheat varies significantly. Getting a high quality performance in wheat cultivation will allow farmers to receive substantial bonuses in price and higher profitability of crops cultivation. The expert suggested that a large potential of profitability, provided a good harvest, is in soybeans, rapeseed, corn and sorghum. Herewith sunflower, corn and rapeseed remain profitable even at the lowest yields. Assessment of profitability under conditions of changing yields and prices showed that the greatest increase of profitability potential is determined primarily by achieving high levels of productivity, as opposed to expectance for a price increase. According to K.Kova’ls’ka in risky areas of farming sorghum is the most cost-effective crop for planting because it is resistant to drought and allows to achieve high levels of productivity – up to 70 dt / ha.: “Sorghum yield may be much higher than the yield of corn in the time of low precipitation level (180-230 mm) in the vegetative period. For example, according to the company, in Mykolayiv region profitability of sorghum compared with corn and spring barley is higher by 32% and 36% respectively. Every year, “NIBULON” increases the areas designated for sorghum cultivation. Difficult weather conditions that can lead to loss of winter crops may further increase the production of sorghum,” the expert concluded.
