A Large-scale Fire Drill at NIBULON Shipbuilding and Repair Yard

NIBULON’s voluntary fire brigade, the divisions of the state fire and salvage units No3 and No4, the divisions of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service as well as of an emergency and rescue unit, trained to extinguish a fire on facilities afloat, on board vessels in ports, docks, and bays. The exercise was based on a simulated decompression of a fuel system causing diesel fuel spill and a fire during welding operations in the engine room of the specialized MYKOLAIVSKYI-2 hopper barge. The simulated fire started to spread in the engine department and over the area of 100 square meters when the first divisions of the State Emergency Service arrived. The fire was about to spread to the vessel’s upper deck. The large concentration of smoke and the high temperature caused two people to be traped in the workshop area. The alarm and firefighting systems alerted employees. The shipyard’s management immediately called 101, evacuated the vessel’s crew and started to extinguish a fire using primary firefighting measures. NIBULON’s firefighting team was the first to arrive, performing all the required measures to extinguish the fire and to prevent it from spreading. Consequently, the firefighters laid a supply line with a firefighting monitor to protect the spaces on the main deck and the adjacent non-self-propelled vessel. The firefighting divisions of Zavodskyi, Tsentralnyi and Inhulskyi districts also arrived. The specialists from the gas rescue service rescued people from the workshop. The healthcare workers provided first aid to the injured. At the same time the fire brigade laid hose lines, provided water and foam monitors to extinguish a stimulated fire and to protect spaces on the vessel’s main deck. The firefighting brigade activities were coordinated by the deployed firefighting headquarters.A total of 8 units of firefighting machinery and 32 persons efficiently conducted these tasks.By conducting operational and tactical exercises, the firefighters trained: – to extinguish a simulated fire by NIBULON’s team until the firefighting and rescue divisions of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service arrived;- to improve coordinated actions between the shipyard’s management and the firefighting headquarters; – to improve well-coordinated teamwork between the divisions of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service and the voluntary fire brigade of NIBULON’s transshipment terminal when extinguishing a fire on board a floating vessel;- to search and rescue people on board a vessel;- to operate firefighting machinery as well as firefighting and technical equipment when extinguishing a fire on board a vessel.According to the fire drill, the participants managed to perform successfully all the main and additional tasks. NIBULON’s firefighting team and the divisions of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service have achieved a high level of cooperation. Each party could adopt the experience, practice skills and knowledge to fight a fire on floating facilities. Considering the highly qualified team and the required number of firefighting equipment involved in the fire drill, the firefighters efficiently used the required firefighting means to conduct rescue operations. The simulated fire was localized and extinguished. Please note that NIBULON’s branches regularly become the sites for operational and tactical firefighting exercises, thereby contributing to the prevention of emergency situations and ensuring well-coordinated work in case of an emergency. The employees at the company’s branches are given instructions on fire safety requirements; the voluntary fire brigades train regularly. Safety first!
